Downlink Single-Snapshot Localization and Mapping With a Single-Antenna Receiver

5G mmWave MIMO systems enable accurate estimation of the user position and mapping radio environment using a single snapshot when both base station (BS) are equipped with large antenna arrays. However, massive arrays initially expected only at BS side, likely leaving users one or very few antennas. In this paper, we propose novel method for single-snapshot localization in more challenging case single-antenna receiver. The joint maximum likelihood (ML) problem is formulated its solution formally derived. To avoid burden full-dimensional search over space unknown parameters, present practical approach that exploits sparsity channels to compute an approximate ML estimate. A thorough analysis, including derivation Cramér-Rao lower bounds, reveals can be achieved also MISO setup even direct line-of-sight path between severely attenuated.
